Joanne Jamie

Professor Joanne Jamie is a bioorganic and medicinal chemist who collaborates with Aboriginal communities to examine medicinal plants and revitalise customary knowledges. As an ethical extension of her research, she founded the National Indigenous Science Education Program (NISEP), which empowers Indigenous secondary students as STEM leaders. NISEP has earned recognition through the inaugural 2019 Australian Museum Eureka Prize for STEM Inclusion and the 2021 AFR Higher Education Opportunity and Inclusion Award. Joanne is also a strong advocate for respectfully incorporating Indigenous knowledges into curricula. Joanne developed the Macquarie University subject Engaging the Community in Science which allows Macquarie undergraduate students to contribute to NISEP and other STEM outreach. Joanne's contributions have been acknowledged with the 2019 Macquarie University Reconciliation Award and a 2019 Royal Australian Chemical Institute Citation, and most recently, the Royal Australian Chemical Institute 2024 Fensham Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Chemical Education.
